AI Citation Index Shows Uneven Coverage
Machine Relations’ September 26 AI Citation Index release found major observation gaps across answer engines, especially Google AI surfaces.
The News
Machine Relations published analysis on September 27 of its September 26 AI Citation Index release. The release covers six answer engines, 133 observed days, 16,925 eligible answer runs, 132,514 citation events, and 23,978 cited domains. Perplexity was observed on all 133 days, while Google AI Overviews appeared on 74 days and Google AI Mode on 91, despite all engines being marked healthy in the release.
The OPTYX Analysis
This is an AI answer platform signal because citation measurement now depends on surface availability, not only ranking or model behavior. The mechanism is conditional answer visibility, where systems such as AI Overviews may not appear for every query, geography, language, or day. Strategically, the finding separates platform health from measurement coverage. The change matters because cross-engine AI visibility benchmarks can overstate or understate performance when one answer surface contributes far fewer observable runs than another within the same reporting window.
Enterprise Impact
The exposed operator is the enterprise SEO analyst, GEO platform buyer, comms measurement lead, or executive dashboard owner comparing ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. The vulnerability is treating an aggregate share-of-citations metric as stable when the underlying engine-day coverage is uneven. Required move is a measurement-control layer that reports denominator, trigger rate, query eligibility, market coverage, and missing-surface days. Vendors and internal teams should publish coverage-adjusted benchmarks before using AI citation movement to justify budget, content, or PR decisions.
